The Grumman AA-5X Cheetah/Traveler/Tiger
Construction Process |

Tail Step 6: Rudder Horn Bend the rudder horn wire from 1/8" music wire similar to the the way the elevator horn was done. Cut the control horn from brass and solder to the music wire. Drill a 1/8" hole into the rudder and glue the horn into place. |

|
Tail Step 7: Tail Spacers Temporarily place the horizontal stabilizer and elevator onto the fuselage. Using some 5/16" square balsa, cut and glue some spacers onto the fuselage behind the elevator wire joiner.
Now, remove the horizontal stabilizer and notch the top wedge piece and the rear of the turtle decking to accept the vertical stabilizer.
Tack glue a temporary 5/16" spacer on top of the fuse just behind the notch that was cut into the wedge. This spacer will hold up the rear fairing blocks when they are sanded to shape.

Tail Step 8: Fairing Blocks Take the fairing block and cut it into two pieces as shown. This allows both fairing blocks to be used from one piece of balsa block.
Glue the last former to the end of the fuselage.
Tack glue the fairing blocks to the balsa spacers. Make sure to leave a 5/16" gap between them to allow the rudder to pass through.
With a coarse (60 grit) sanding block, rough out the shape of the blocks to fair into the fuse. Finish sand them with 150 and 220 for final shaping.
Break the blocks free from the fuselage. Remove the front temporary spacer and test fit the stabilizers in place to check for fit of the fairing blocks. Add a scrap piece of 5/15" balsa under the rudder to fill in the remaining gap.
