Initial work on 1965 110hp Corvair engine

13

engine

DETAIL:

8/13 - I purchased a used (of course) 1965 110hp Corvair engine from  guy on Ebay.  Fortunately he was located only about 20 miles from me so I was able to pick it up from him easily. The guy is a Corvair junkie.  Had about 4 other engines and 2 Corvairs sitting in his garage.

The engine appears to be in good shape.  It turned over with a wrench so it's not frozen solid. When I got it home I began to do initial disassembly.  I removed the cooling fan shroud and all cooling baffles.  I also removed the oil pan.  I haven't yet gotten into the guts but I'm hoping it's all in good shape.  The pistons I'm not worried about.  I'll be replacing them with forged pistons.

8/24 - I've done a bit of cleaning on the case and heads.  They are looking good so far. I'm using oven cleaner to get the grime off.  I then spray it off with hi pressure water.

I've done a bit of grinding of the heads to remove flash and get rid of all the bad casting errors. I intend to clean and polish many of the parts. Next is a trip to the machine shop to get the heads ground to spec.

8/27 - Still been working on cleaning up the engine.  Made significant progress today on cleaning of the block.  After using oven cleaner which got most of the thick caked on grime off, I used a small stainless steel rotary wire brush.  Using my power drill and the brush I was able to get 95% of all the grime off plus the brush leaves a very shiny polished finish on the block.  It took about an hour to brush one half of the block.  I also bought some hi-temp engine paint for the cylinders and push rod tubes.  I'm going to do mine in blue.  So I'll eventually have a polished aluminum and gloss blue engine.  A pic below of a Pat Panzera's Corvair engine meant only for the Engine God's themselves. WOW!
