Began fuselage construction

fuselage

DETAIL:

Today I started building the left fuselage side.  I used some extra 2x4 pine and made up a bunch of 1x1x2" blocks.  These were screwed to the table to help form the longerons and get it to the right shape. It was a bit tricky because I'm stretching my firewall 1.5" forward, the tail post back 1" and the pilot seat back 2.5".  This will give me more room (I'm 6'4") and it will give my passenger a bit of extra space as well.  I've done the math and this should not affect the CG by much at all.  I'll make the motor mount to the exact length needed to finalize the CG.

I'm cutting the uprights and diagonals on my bandsaw to the approximate angle on both ends, then using my 12" disc sander with 80 grit to bring the pieces exactly to size.  I'm making them to where you just have to lightly tap them into place. When I glue, I pull the longerons apart to facilitate putting the stick in without scraping off all the glue. The process goes rather quickly.  I had all the pieces cut in and sanded in 40 minutes.

I made 1x1" triangle corner blocks that I'll put into the corners of the joints.  I am NOT putting them at the firewall or landing gear longeron locations yet.  I need to se how the metal fittings may interfere with them.  I'll check that out when I have the sides joined.

Next task was to glue them all into place.  I mixed up a batch of T-88 and went for it.

Next, the 1/8" birch ply gussets.
