Corvair Rear Starter

3.0

engine

DETAIL:

I'm using a Nissan Sentra starter and flexplate for my rear start system.  My rear start setup is similar to Mark Langford's.  My alternator/oil filter cover is either from an early 95hp or 140hp engine (I'm not sure which) because it has a slightly different shape, but I'm sure the normal 110hp version would work the same way with a slightly modified upper starter bracket.

I fabricated an upper mount/bracket from 1/4" 6061 that captures the existing 3/8-16 holes in the left side of the alternator cover.  There is an approx. 80 degree bend in the mount with a hole that lines up with the top Sentra starter hole.

The lower mount is pretty much like Mark's.  Just a 1/4" 6061 bar with 3 holes in it.  The lower two holes capture the rear case studs and the outer hole lines up with the Sentra starter lower hole.

When it's all tightened down it's amazingly stiff.  Very solid mounting method and can be done with no welding.  I made my brackets on a wood bandsaw and used my 12" disc sander to round edges and do minor shaping.  My method drops the starter slightly more than 1.0" compared to Mark's.  I made the entire setup in about 3 hours.  I love it....and it's crazy simple!

It should be noted that this method works because of two things.

1. Mark Langford's "extended length" John Deer Dynamo pulley/Sentra flexplate adapter design.

2. 3 line oil system with the oil cooler holes blocked off via an oil cooler bypass manifold with a notch machined in it.

Ed Veneck from the Corvaircraft email list had a bunch of Marks pulley design fabricated.  My dad and I each snatched one up.  Ed had the pulleys made a tad longer than Mark's original to push the starter more towards the rear.  This proved to be key to this installation.  As it is I have only about 1/8" of clearance between the rear of the starter housing to the oil cooler manifold block I fabricated from 1x3/4 aluminum.  Without this longer pulley adapter the starter would have to be raised up so far that the top bracket may not have worked as easy as it did. There is no room for fittings on the oil cooler bypass manifold if you wanted to run a 4 line oil system unless you tapped holes into the ends of the manifold, in which case a 4 line system may work fine.

Anyone doing a rear start 3 line oil system using the Sentra starter/flexplate may benefit from this easy mounting method.
