Corvair oil cooler-filter mods.

2.0

engine

DETAIL:

I am doing a rear starter Corvair conversion.  I'm doing this to keep the cowling narrow near the front and fair right into a 10" spinner.

To do a rear start Corvair the oil cooler and oil filter cannot be in the stock locations. I am remote mounting the oil cooler and filter on the firewall.  I cut the oil filter mount from the alternator/oil filter cover.  I beveled the two holes to provide enough clearance for installing AN-6 hose ends.  Without the angled cuts the hose ends would be right next to each other and would make tightening the hose ends impossible.  You can see in the pics below how I angled each cut and then welded up some Earl's AN-6 weld bungs.

Also notice I am using an Earl's 19 row oil cooler.  A VERY nice cooler already equipped with AN-6 male fittings.  About a pound heavier than a stock Corvair oil cooler but nicer in my opinion. I got this oil cooler from American Streed Rods for $150.

If you look closely you will also notice the stock oil filler tube hole has been capped and welded shut.  I am using a VW aftermarket oil filler extension made from aluminum that was welded to the top cover like Pat Panzera did on his red show engine.

Look below and you'll see s pic of me holding an aluminum block with a notch machined into it.  I call it the oil cooler bypass manifold.  It bolts up where the stock oil cooler adapter used to go.  It simply allows the oil to flow out of the block and right back in. This is needed for a 3 line oil system where you run the oil lines out/in from the oil filter mount.

Lastly, I drilled and tapped my William Wynne deep aluminum oil pan with a 1/2-20 tap to accept a neat gadget I picked up.... a Fumoto quick drain oil pan plug.  It's a spring loaded valve that positively locks in the closed position but allows quick draining of the oil.  It has a hose barb on it so that a hose can be attached and run down to the bottom of the cowling for easy and clean oil changes.  I have welded a tab on the pan that allows me to safety wire the drain valve.
