Today my dad came over and we
tackled the job of joining the fuselage sides. This wasn't as hard as I
originally had figured it would be, but it was tedious getting everything
square. We utilized every type of clamp we had.... C-clamps, spring
clamps, strap clamps and bar clamps.
I put the fuse upside down on the table and lifted it up from the table by 3/4". This allowed me to put strap clamps all the way around the fuse. I used 3/4" MDF board and made "station jigs". Basically a 3" wide piece of MDF with tabs screwed on at the proper widths to get the fuse to the right dimension at the stations. The pictures show them clearly. We used a square at each station to check for alignment. When we were assured it was true we glued it up and left it overnight. Next is installation of the plywood on the bottom. remember..... I widened my fuselage by about 2" at Station 3, moved the rear seat back 2", the firewall forward 1.75" and the tail post back 1". I'm a tall guy and need the space. Mr. John Grega, the man who "designed" the GN-1 doesn't approve of my modifications according to a few of his emails to me, but that's the beauty of experimental aircraft. He doesn't have to approve... Only the FAA.
