Center Section rigging & "Flop"

8.0

wing

DETAIL:

Now that the center section is completed it was time to bolt it up to the cabanes and do the cable rigging. I am using 1/8" stainless cable with rotary swaged MS fork ends on the wing end of the cables and turnbuckles and Nico presses on the lower end by the longeron.

Due to my height, 6'4", I decided it would be best if my center section had a large "flop" hinged at the rear spar.  I need to be able to climb into this plane with ease and this was the only solution.  Now that the main center section is complete I started on the flop.

Using some left over 3/16" ply I made the ribs.  I also used some of the same ply for the spars that will be used in the flop. The flop will be locked in the down position with some AN latches.

You can see the way I hinged the flop in some pics below.  I used a 1/8"x1" 6061 aluminum bar mounted to the ends of the ribs of both the center section and the flop.  A screw through the pieces creates the pivot point.  This way the flop opens up and away from the rear spar as it is pulled up and can be opened 180 degrees and rested on top of the center section.
